Polyisobutene-based self‑healing corrosion protection

Corrosion attacks steel pipe wherever oxygen and moisture reach the surface: at joints, bends, valves, flanges and under insulation. Stopaq solves that without heavy surface preparation. ST2 cleaning is enough, and rust does not have to be ground off as long as the surface is clean of dirt. The cold‑applied visco‑elastic polyisobutene (PIB) compound flows into surface irregularities and shuts out oxygen and electrolyte, so the oxidation process stops. The compound is organic and never dries or cures, so it self‑heals small mechanical damage. No primer, no blasting, and compatible with cathodic protection.

Layer build-up

The compound flows into the pores of the surface.

A conventional coating needs a clean surface, usually blasted and primed. Stopaq does not. Wire brushing to ST 2 is enough, and the visco-elastic compound flows into the irregularities that leaves behind and fills them. With oxygen and electrolyte shut out of the surface, oxidation stops. A mechanical overwrap goes on top.

At the bottom the steel, cleaned by wire brushing to ST 2, so the surface stays irregular and not all rust has been removed. Above it the visco‑elastic polyisobutene compound, which flows into those irregularities and fills them completely. On top, a mechanical PE overwrap. Where this is used

  • Buried pipelines
  • Refineries and process piping
  • Municipal water networks
  • Corrosion under insulation (CUI)
  • Tanks and steel structures
  • Preventive protection before corrosion starts
Smaller quantities

Also for individuals and maintenance teams.

Stopaq doesn't have to be ordered in industrial volumes. Smaller batches, single rolls, and maintenance-sized sets ship directly from the Tuusula warehouse. Ask about pick-up or delivery options.

Stopaq's visco-elastic matrix keeps re-sealing the joint for the pipe's whole service life.

Frequently asked questions

Stopaq, common questions

What is Stopaq used for?
Stopaq protects steel and ductile-iron pipes, field joints and fittings against external corrosion, buried, submerged or above ground. Typical uses are buried lines, process piping, tanks and municipal water networks.
What temperature does Stopaq withstand?
The operating temperature of Stopaq Wrappingband is −45 °C to +70 °C, with short-term thermal resistance to +90 °C. Casing Filler works from −20 °C to +35 °C and Outerwrap from −30 °C to +70 °C. The values are product-specific and come from the manufacturer datasheets.
Does Stopaq need blasting or a primer?
No. Stopaq is applied cold without primer, and wire brushing to cleanliness grade St 2 is enough. This speeds up the work and is feasible in field conditions.
What does self‑healing protection mean?
The visco-elastic polyisobutene compound in Stopaq stays soft for its whole service life. It flows into surface irregularities and fills small dents and cracks by itself, so a point defect does not start corrosion under the protection.
Is Stopaq compatible with cathodic protection?
Yes. Stopaq does not interfere with cathodic protection, so it can be used on cathodically protected lines. This matters on long buried transmission lines, for example.
Is Stopaq suitable for drinking water pipes?
Stopaq Wrappingband holds NSF/ANSI 61 approval, which covers materials for drinking water systems. The product also meets ISO 21809-3 and EN 12068 (KIWA) requirements.
Can I buy a smaller quantity of Stopaq for maintenance?
Yes. We also deliver smaller quantities for maintenance and repair work from the Tuusula warehouse. Tell us the quantity you need and we confirm availability and delivery time.
